Consistent implementation of group strategy “VNG 2030+”: VNG subsidiary adds 10 further biogas plants in eastern Germany to its biogas business

BALANCE Erneuerbare Energien GmbH (BEE), a wholly-owned subsidiary of VNG Group company BALANCE VNG Bioenergie GmbH (BALANCE), today acquired the biogas plant portfolio of Nordstrom AG. This portfolio includes a total of 10 biogas plants (power generation plants) at eight locations in Saxony-Anhalt (2 plants at Plätz, Hottendorf, Hohenwulsch, Rossau, Mehrin), Brandenburg (Freyenstein) and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (Teterow). The personnel required for plant operation has also been transferred to BEE. The transaction is still subject to approval by the anti-trust authorities. The parties agreed to keep the price confidential. The newly acquired biogas plant portfolio supplements the existing BALANCE portfolio, which previously included 15 plants with a total capacity of about 73 MWFWL.

With the new biogas plant portfolio, BALANCE will boost its installed plant capacity by about one third and is consistently pursuing its growth strategy in the field of green gases. The VNG company is therefore making a key contribution to substantial growth in the biogas field in line with the VNG Group strategy “VNG 2030+”. “BALANCE is pursuing an ambitious growth strategy. In this context, we are committed to operating plants ourselves and to added value in the region. BEE is not only investing in plant designs but also developing these designs consistently through continuous optimization processes. For VNG, biogas plays a key role in our green gas strategy. Biogas allows flexible use and storage and is also suitable for base-load applications. These unique features will mean that biogas can be used to supplement the growing share of fluctuating renewable energies in German power generation on a sustainable basis,” explains Hans-Joachim Polk, Member of the Executive Board of VNG responsible for Infrastructure and Technology.
